What Is Jio Platforms and What Does It Own?
Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL) is the digital holding company of Reliance Industries. It was set up in 2019, and its biggest asset by far is Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL), India’s largest telecom operator. According to Reuters reporting carried by Yahoo Finance, nearly 80% of Jio Platforms’ annual revenue has come from the telecom business.
So when you apply for the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO, you’re mostly buying a telecom company. That’s not a criticism, just the starting point for any honest review.
Beyond mobile, the group includes:
- Home broadband and AirFiber: Jio had 28.6 million fixed broadband subscribers by June 2026, a market share of over 43%, as per BW Businessworld.
- Enterprise and tech subsidiaries: Haptik (conversational AI), Radisys (telecom software) and EasyGov are listed among its subsidiaries on Wikipedia’s Jio Platforms page.
- Apps: JioTV is owned by Jio Platforms. JioSaavn and JioGamesCloud sit in the wider Jio app ecosystem.
- AI infrastructure: Jio has partnered with Nvidia to build AI infrastructure in India, as Reuters has reported.
One thing first-time applicants often get wrong: JioHotstar is not inside Jio Platforms. It belongs to JioStar, a separate Reliance–Disney joint venture. If the streaming story is a big part of why you’re interested, check the business section of the RHP before you bid.
Did you know? In 2020, Jio Platforms raised ₹1,52,056 crore by selling a 32.97% stake to investors like Meta, Google, KKR and ADIA (Wikipedia). That fundraise is why foreign tech giants now sit on its shareholder register.
Why Is the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO India’s Biggest IPO?
Simple: nobody has asked for more money in a single Indian IPO before.
| IPO | Year | Issue size | Type |
| Jio Platforms | 2026 | ₹30,213 crore | 100% fresh issue |
| Hyundai Motor India | 2024 | ₹27,870 crore | 100% offer for sale |
| LIC | 2022 | ₹21,000 crore | 100% offer for sale |
Hyundai’s issue had taken the top spot from LIC, as Outlook Business reported in October 2024. The Jio Platforms Ltd IPO now beats Hyundai by roughly ₹2,300 crore, making it India’s biggest IPO so far.
Size isn’t the only difference. Hyundai and LIC were pure OFS issues, so the money went to the selling shareholder. The Jio Platforms Ltd IPO is entirely fresh issue, so the money raised goes into the company itself.
A small reality check, though. Being the biggest doesn’t guarantee a big listing day. Hyundai’s shares listed at ₹1,931 against an issue price of ₹1,960, a discount of about 1.5%, as Deccan Herald noted. Large issues have a lot of supply to absorb.
Jio IPO Price Band, Lot Size and Minimum Investment
The Jio IPO price band is ₹1,065 to ₹1,119. Most retail investors bid at the “cut-off” price, agreeing to pay whatever final price is fixed. Your UPI mandate blocks money at the upper end.
Here’s how the maths works for a retail investor:
| Application | Lots | Shares | Amount at ₹1,119 |
| Retail minimum | 1 | 12 | ₹13,428 |
| Retail maximum | 14 | 168 | ₹1,87,992 |
| Small HNI minimum | 15 | 180 | ₹2,01,420 |
Source: Chittorgarh
So if you apply for one lot of 12 shares, ₹13,428 gets blocked in your bank account until allotment. If you don’t get shares, the block is released around 27 October.
The retail quota: At least 35% of the net issue is reserved for retail individual investors, with 50% for QIBs and 15% for NIIs, as per IPO Watch.
Is There a Reliance Shareholder Quota in the Jio IPO?
Yes. This is the detail most Reliance shareholders are searching for right now.
- Up to ₹2,500 crore is reserved for eligible Reliance Industries shareholders.
- You qualify if you held at least one RIL share in your Demat account as of 14 October 2026, the date Jio filed its RHP.
- You can bid up to ₹2 lakh in the shareholder category.
- You can also apply separately in the retail or HNI category using the same PAN.
These terms are confirmed by Upstox’s shareholder quota explainer and IPO Ji. In practice, eligible RIL shareholders get two shots at allotment in the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO instead of one.
There’s also an employee reservation with a ₹54 per share discount for eligible Reliance group employees, which The Tribune reported.
How Will Jio Use the IPO Money?
Mostly to cut debt.
The net proceeds will go towards repaying or prepaying borrowings of its material subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, plus general corporate purposes, according to Upstox.
Why does this matter to you? Lower debt means lower interest costs, and that flows straight into profit. Business Standard’s IPO review pointed out exactly this: savings on finance costs, lower leverage and better profitability once the loans are paid down.
The flip side: this isn’t growth capital for a new business line. It’s balance-sheet clean-up. Sensible, but don’t expect the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO money to fund a big new venture.
If you’ve been following how rates are moving, our explainer on the Fed and RBI rate hikes in 2026 shows why cheaper debt is a bigger deal for capital-heavy businesses like telecom.
Jio Platforms Valuation: Is It Expensive?
At the top of the price band, the Jio Platforms valuation works out to about ₹10.3 lakh crore. The Tribune noted that this is more than double the ₹4.9 lakh crore at which Meta and Google invested in 2020. In dollar terms, that’s around $108 billion, as per CNBC.
Interestingly, CNBC also reported that this is lower than many had expected. Several earlier broker and banker estimates were considerably higher than where the price band finally landed.
A lower-than-hyped valuation can leave something on the table for new investors. That’s partly why the grey market got excited.
Market analyst S.P. Tulsian’s IPO analysis puts the issue at about 32 times estimated FY27 earnings and about 13 times EV/EBITDA. Whether that’s cheap or fair depends on how you see Jio’s growth relative to Bharti Airtel.
Jio Platforms Financials: Revenue, Profit, Subscribers and ARPU
These are the latest audited quarterly numbers, for April–June 2026 (Q1 FY27), as reported by TelecomLead and BW Businessworld:
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Year-on-year change |
| Gross revenue | ₹45,961 crore | +12% |
| Revenue from operations | ₹39,173 crore | +11.8% |
| EBITDA | ₹20,865 crore | +15.1% |
| EBITDA margin | 53.3% | +150 bps |
| Net profit | ₹7,764 crore | +9.2% |
| ARPU (per user per month) | ₹215.6 | up from ₹208.8 |
| Total subscribers | 533.3 million | +8.9 million in the quarter |
| 5G subscribers | 285 million | – |
Two things stand out.
First, EBITDA is growing faster than revenue, a sign of operating leverage.
Second, ARPU growth is slow. Jio’s ARPU grew about 3% year-on-year, which S.P. Tulsian’s analysis notes is behind Airtel’s 5% and Vodafone Idea’s 7% for the same period. Airtel’s ARPU of ₹264 is roughly 18% higher than Jio’s.
The gap comes mostly from customer mix. Airtel has more postpaid and premium users, while Reliance Jio has more mass-market prepaid users. Closing that gap through tariff hikes and upgrades is a big part of the bull case for Reliance Jio.
For official subscriber numbers across all operators, TRAI’s monthly telecom subscription reports are the primary source.

Strengths and Risks: A Balanced Jio Platforms IPO Review
No IPO is all upside. Here’s a balanced view of the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO.
| Strengths | Risks |
| Market leader with 533.3 million users | ARPU lags Airtel by about 18% |
| EBITDA margin at a record 53.3% | Heavy dependence on telecom tariffs, which are politically sensitive |
| Carried about 60% of India’s wireless data traffic in FY26 (Ventura Securities via MENAFN) | Large 5G capex keeps depreciation and finance costs high |
| IPO money cuts debt, which should lift profits | Satellite broadband competition, including Starlink |
| Strong backers: Meta, Google, anchor investors like BlackRock | Holding-company discount debate at the RIL level |
| Growth levers in home broadband, enterprise and AI | Valuation leaves less room if growth disappoints |
A note on the holding-company point. Some analysts have flagged that listing Jio as a subsidiary, rather than through a clean demerger, could create a “holdco discount” on RIL’s own shares, as Business Standard has reported. That matters more to RIL shareholders than to fresh Jio applicants, but it’s worth knowing.
The issue is also opening during a weak patch for the broader market, as The Tribune noted. Market mood can affect listing-day prices regardless of quality.
Jio IPO GMP: What Is the Grey Market Saying?
The Jio IPO GMP was quoted between roughly ₹245 and ₹270 on 20 October, according to trackers like InvestorGain and IPO Ji. That implies a premium of about 22–24% over the upper price band.
Read this carefully: the grey market premium is unofficial. It’s an unregulated market that SEBI doesn’t recognise and exchanges don’t publish. GMPs swing sharply, and they’ve been wrong many times on listing day.
Treat the Jio IPO grey market premium as a mood indicator, not a forecast. It should never be the main reason you apply.
How to Apply for the Jio IPO via UPI or ASBA
Applying for the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO takes about five minutes.
- Log in to your broker app (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One, etc.) and go to the IPO section.
- Choose your category: retail, shareholder (if you held RIL on 14 October), or employee.
- Enter your bid: pick the number of lots and tick “cut-off price” to bid at the final price.
- Enter your UPI ID and submit the application.
- Approve the UPI mandate in your UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, BHIM or your bank’s app) before 5 pm on 23 October.
You can also apply through ASBA in net banking, where your bank blocks the funds directly. Our guide to digital payment trends in India explains how UPI mandates work behind the scenes.
Tip: Don’t place multiple applications in the same category under one PAN. They’ll be rejected. The only exception is applying once in the retail category and once in the shareholder quota, which is allowed here.

How to Check Jio IPO Allotment Status Online
The basis of allotment is expected on 26 October. After that, you can check the Jio IPO allotment status in three ways:
- Registrar website: Visit the KFin Technologies IPO status page, select Jio Platforms, and enter your PAN or application number.
- BSE: Use the BSE allotment status page. Select “Equity”, choose the issue name and enter your details.
- NSE: Check the NSE website under the IPO bid verification section.
If you got shares, they’ll appear in your Demat by 27 October. If not, the blocked amount is released.
If the retail portion is heavily oversubscribed, allotment goes by lottery and most applicants get one lot or nothing. Applying for more lots usually doesn’t improve your retail odds.

What Are Analysts Saying About the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO?
Most brokerages are positive, but not all voices are cheering.
The bullish view:
- Analysts led by Pranav Kshatriya gave the issue a “subscribe” rating, citing market leadership, pricing power and execution track record, according to Business Standard.
- Emkay Global highlighted 16.2% EBITDA growth and 18.4% profit growth a year, on a compounded basis, between FY24 and FY26, as per MENAFN.
- Ventura Securities also recommended subscribing, pointing to Jio’s scale and data traffic share.
The cautious view:
- The same Business Standard review noted that Bharti Airtel has better free cash flow and return on capital, so Jio doesn’t deserve a big premium over it.
- Deven Choksey of DRChoksey Finserv told CNBC that, at its core, Jio is still a telecom company, despite its tech pitch.
- S.P. Tulsian’s analysis found Jio trailing Airtel in growth across subscribers, ARPU, revenue, EBITDA and profit in Q1 FY27.
Big money is clearly interested. Jio raised about $853.3 million from anchor investors including ADIA, BlackRock and Fidelity before the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO opened, according to Reuters via MarketScreener. Still, anchors have different time horizons from a retail investor in Pune or Patna.
Should You Apply for the Jio Platforms IPO?
That’s your call. A few questions worth asking yourself:
- Listing gains or a long hold? Listing gains depend on market mood. Long-term returns depend on Jio raising ARPU and growing beyond telecom.
- Do you already own Reliance? Then you already have indirect exposure to Reliance Jio through RIL’s 66%+ stake. Buying more adds concentration.
- Can you afford to see this fall 10–15% after listing? Even good companies have bad listing days, as Hyundai showed.
Is the Jio IPO good for long-term investment? It’s a mature market leader with steady cash flows and real growth levers, but it’s priced as a quality business, so the margin for error is thinner. You can verify a SEBI-registered adviser on SEBI’s official website.
Final Thoughts
The Jio Platforms Ltd IPO is a landmark for Indian markets: the largest issue ever, a 100% fresh issue, and a chance for retail investors to own a direct slice of India’s biggest telecom network. The financials show a profitable, cash-generating business with a record EBITDA margin and a clear debt-reduction plan.
At the same time, ARPU growth trails rivals, the business still leans on telecom, and the valuation already prices in a lot of quality. Before you bid in the Jio Platforms Ltd IPO, read the RHP, know your time horizon, and decide what fits your money.

How will Jio use the IPO money?
Jio will mainly use the IPO money to repay or prepay borrowings of its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, with the rest for general corporate purposes. Since it’s a 100% fresh issue with no offer for sale, the proceeds go to the company, not to existing shareholders like Reliance Industries.
Which was bigger: the Jio IPO, Hyundai India IPO or LIC IPO?
The Jio IPO is the biggest, at up to ₹30,213 crore. Hyundai Motor India’s IPO raised ₹27,870 crore in 2024, and LIC’s raised ₹21,000 crore in 2022. Unlike those two, which were offers for sale, Jio’s issue is entirely fresh shares.
What is the Jio IPO GMP?
The Jio IPO GMP was quoted at roughly ₹245–₹270 on 20 October, around 22–24% above the upper band. GMP is unofficial, unregulated and changes daily. It’s not published by any exchange and has often been wrong about listing prices, so don’t base your decision on it.
